Grow your own fruit bushes from cuttings in March and April

Early spring is a good time to prepare to grow your own new fruit bushes from cuttings such as currants and berries. It’s a quick and easy job that creates lots of free new plants for your garden and/or to give to neighbours.

Take cuttings from the new wood on the bush (lighter coloured) about 20 cm long just below a bud and stick in the ground 10-15 cm deep. That’s it, just leave it to grow.

You can put lots of cuttings together in a small area of ground and move them once they have grown.

Growing fruit bushes from cuttings is one of my favourite jobs to kick off the growing season. Dead easy and super productive.

Blackcurrants, redcurrants, whitecurrants, blueberries, blackberries, and gooseberries all grow extremely easily from simple cuttings like this.

It will take a few years for your bushes to grow to a decent size, but they should root quickly and soon become robust plants that you can set aside for a bit until they have developed.

Consider sharing your plants around the neighborhood so everyone can enjoy these wonderful UK fruits!
